Private industry and government agencies are developing a smarter, more technologically advanced electric grid and more efficiently managing our electricity demands. This speeds deployment of clean energy technologies like solar and wind. It also lowers harmful carbon dioxide emissions, safeguards our grid from physical and cyber-attacks, and saves businesses and consumers money while protecting their privacy. Various workers are needed to make this transition happen, including electrical engineers, computer system designers, and workers who install smarter switches. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the smart grid program in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act alone supported at least 47,000 jobs.
