A transformation is happening across the U.S. auto industry. Driven by an emergence of technology and consumer demand, U.S. automakers are designing and building some of the world’s best high-mileage, low-emissions vehicles. This transformation is creating jobs. Since the auto industry employment low point in June 2009, the U.S. auto sector has added more than 263,000 jobs as of January 2013. Employment in auto manufacturing (motor vehicle assembly plus motor vehicle parts manufacturing) has increased by about 164,000 for a 26-percent gain since the trough. Auto dealer jobs have also grown by almost 100,000 jobs. Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana represent the largest concentration of auto manufacturing jobs, accounting for 36 percent of auto manufacturing jobs nationwide, according to December 2012 figures.
